October is Cybersecurity Awareness

Eastex Credit Union is bringing awareness to the importance of safety in the digital world. There are many ways that hackers can attempt to steal your personal information, so we’re shedding light on some important cybersecurity tips to keep in mind. This year’s theme is “It’s easy to stay safe online.” We believe it should be easy to stay safe in an ever-evolving technological world with these simple tips.

Enable Multifactor Authentication

Multifactor authentication (MFA) is an authentication method that requires the user to provide two or more verification factors to gain access to a resource such as an application, online account, or VPN. It requires one or more additional verification factors that decrease the likelihood of a successful cyber-attack. MFA increases security because even if one credential is compromised, unauthorized users will be unable to meet the second authentication requirement, hindering their ability to gain access to personal information and data.

Use Strong Passwords

Passwords are the key to your digital castle. Take extra steps to ensure you’re protected by using long, unique, and complex passwords for your accounts. The more complex your passwords are, the more protected your information will be from cyber threats and hackers. Passwords should also be different on each of your online accounts. Consider using a digital wallet to keep track of different passwords.

Update Antivirus Software

Antivirus software can identify and block viruses and malicious software before they have a chance to infect your computer. Once you install appropriate antivirus software, it’s important to regularly update software and apps. Antivirus software vendors find new and updated malware daily, so it’s important to have the latest updates installed on your computer. Oftentimes, this will install automatically, but it’s always a good idea to review. Installing the latest updates for devices, software, and apps helps to obtain the best security available.

Recognize and Report Phishing

Don’t take the bait when it comes to phishing. Phishing is when criminals use fake emails, text messages, or social media posts to lure you into clicking a harmful link that can access your information. These phishing emails can sometimes look legitimate – as if they are coming from a family member, job opportunity, or “free” prize – and often have a sense of urgency. Clicking on a phishing link could breach your data and install malware onto devices. Never click on suspicious links. Report the phishing attempt and block the sender once you’ve confirmed the inauthenticity of the source.

Prioritize Digital Security

Most people store personal information on their computers. If you don’t protect your computer properly, it’s more likely that your personal information can be accessed. We hope you feel empowered to now protect personal information and data from potential breaches and hackers.
